The athlete's ethical code is not just a piece of paper. It is a set of rules that distinguishes a great champion from a good player. It is respect for the opponent, fair play, and dignity regardless of the score. In 2026, this code becomes particularly important as technology and social networks blur the boundaries. Let's discuss the main principles.

Fair Play

No doping, even vitamins from a questionable pharmacy. Honesty with referees and admitting mistakes. If a referee makes a mistake in your favor (for example, awarding a goal that didn't happen), an ethical athlete must tell the truth. This also includes: not faking injuries and not provoking the opponent.

A classic example: footballer Diego Maradona could have admitted the "hand of God," but he didn't. A modern example: tennis players pointing at the line. This is the code.

Respect for the Opponent

Handshakes before and after the match are not empty formalities. It is a ritual of equality. According to the rules of ethics, you cannot shout in the face of the defeated, make degrading gestures, or insult in interviews after the game. Bad examples include players refusing to shake hands.

An athlete must also respect the opponent's injuries: not to beat if he falls (in boxing), not to aim at a vulnerable spot (in tennis).

Behavior with Fans and the Press

Stars should not insult fans, even if they shout offensive things. On the contrary, autographs, smiles, and selfies are part of the code. When communicating with journalists, you cannot incite hatred towards other teams, leak insider information, or shift blame to referees. Also, you cannot troll your opponent on social media.

Attitude towards Referees

The referee is always right (even if he makes a mistake). The code obliges the athlete not to argue fiercely, not to hit the racket on the court, and not to insult the referee. A dispute with an arbiter is allowed only through an official protest by the captain of the team, but not through shouting in his face.

Outside Sports

The ethical code also applies to life. An athlete must be a role model for children, not to use prohibited drugs and substances, not to break the law. He also bears responsibility for his statements on TikTok that contradict the values of sports. Violations of the code result in sanctions: fines, disqualifications, and sometimes even criminal cases.
