Football, sports, and ice cream. At first glance, the connection is not obvious. But once you turn off the TV and go to the stadium, you'll understand: it's a love triangle that has been going on for over a century. The sweet chill on a hot day, when millionaires are running on the field and the stands are buzzing. Ice cream is not just a dessert for fans. It's a ritual, an industry, and even part of the strategy (in a metaphorical sense). Let's figure out how the ice cream and football intertwined into a global tradition.

Ice Cream at Stadiums: A Brief History

As early as the 1920s, ice cream vendors appeared on English stadiums. Fans, tired of shouting and the noise, needed a refreshment. In the USA, ice cream in waffle cones was sold at baseball games since the 1930s. Football picked up the trend later, in the 1950s, when mass refrigerators became available. In the 1960s, ice cream became a symbol of "dolce vita" for fans on Italian stadiums (Milan, Turin). Today, in 2026, it's hard to imagine a football match without ice cream carts in the aisles. In Brazil, at the Maracana, ice cream is sold with shouts of "Sorvete! Sorvete!" drowning out the roar of the crowd.

Why Ice Cream is Perfect for Football

The reasons are physiology and psychology. On a hot day (and many championships take place in the summer), ice cream lowers body temperature, helping not to overheat. During half-time, fans spend energy on cheering, clapping, stamping. Ice cream provides a quick sugar (glucose), nourishing the brain and muscles. Taste receptors also want a celebration: sweets trigger the release of dopamine, enhancing the joy of the game. Moreover, ice cream is a social glue. Sharing ice cream with a neighbor on the stands, laughing at a dropped spoon - all this brings people closer. And it's practical: eat the cone - no waste (except for a napkin).

Stadiums with the Best Waffles

Fans vote not only with flags but also with their wallets. In Europe, the best ice cream on stadiums is famous at the "Allianz Arena" in Munich, where they sell gelato from the local factory "Munchen Gel" with added wheat beer. In "Camp Nou" in Barcelona, there is a sorbet made of strawberry and lemon, reminiscent of Catalan markets. In "Santiago Bernabeu" (Madrid), there is creamy ice cream with pieces of alfajores (cookies). In "The Emirates" (London), there is apple sorbet, a tribute to English gardens. At "Luzhniki" in Moscow, you can find a sundae by Soviet GOST (fat content 15%), sold in bricks - nostalgia for the older generation.

Ice Cream as a Marketing Trick

Football clubs have long understood that ice cream is not just food but also a way to make money and build loyalty. "Bayern" releases a limited edition ice cream in the club colors (red, blue, white). "Manchester United" - cones with the club logo. "Paris Saint-Germain" - ice cream with images of Mbappé on the packaging. In 2026, the Italian brand "Gelateria Calcio" created a series "Tastes of Legends": ice cream "Maradona" (caramel with rum), "Baggio" (chocolate with chili), "Maldini" (fistich and honey). A portion of the proceeds goes to children's football schools.

Ice Cream and Championship Finals

The finals of major tournaments are not without ice cream. According to statistics, on the day of the World Cup final, ice cream sales in the host country increase by 300%. In 2018, in Russia, ice cream was sold right at the entrance to the stadium during the final, and in "Match" branded cones. In 2022, in Qatar, due to the heat, ice cream was literally a salvation - it was even distributed by volunteers with carts. In 2026, at the final in the USA ("MetLife Stadium"), a record is expected: 50,000 portions in the evening. Organizers even brought ice cream carts to keep them from melting under the New Jersey sun.

Healthy Lifestyle and the Athlete's Dilemma

What about the players themselves? Can they eat ice cream? On the one hand, it contains a lot of sugar and fat, which is harmful to shape. On the other hand, even dietitians of top clubs allow a small amount (one ice cream cone after the match). For example, Cristiano Ronaldo allowed himself ice cream on his son's birthday. Lionel Messi prefers fruit sorbet (sorbet) without milk. After winning the championship, players at "Manchester City" are served ice cream with champagne. However, coaches do not recommend it: better a protein bar. However, for fans, ice cream is not about the players, but about themselves.

Special Offers and Memes

There are plenty of memes about ice cream and football on the internet. A classic: "If your team loses, a sundae softens the pain." Or: "The referee ate ice cream and didn't notice the penalty." In 2025, a video went viral on Twitter where a Liverpool fan ate a cone and cried after Everton scored a goal in the last minute. During the 2026 World Cup, a challenge #IceCreamGoal will be launched on social networks: record yourself eating ice cream at the moment when your team scores a goal.

Exotic Flavors for Brave Fans

The football world is united, but ice cream flavors differ. In Japan, they sell ice cream with a miso soup and unagi (eel) flavor on the stands. In Mexico, it's with chili and lime to "spice up" the stands. In Brazil, ice cream with acai berries and cassava. In Australia, with vegemite (a salty paste), but this is for extreme fans. In England, they tried to launch a shepherd's pie-flavored ice cream, but the experiment failed. In Russia, there is also a unique offer: at "Luzhniki," you can buy "Mors-ice cream" made of cranberry and lingonberry - sour-sweet, invigorating.

Ice Cream and Superstitions

Football fans are a superstitious people. Some eat ice cream with one hand, others - in a certain order (first chocolate, then vanilla). In Italy, there is a belief that if you eat pistachio ice cream before a derby, your team won't lose. In Germany, fans buy ice cream at the stadium only after their team scores a goal - otherwise, you can "jinx." In Brazil, it's customary to drink acai not with a spoon, but with a straw, as a talisman.

Football, sports, and ice cream - these are the three pillars on which the happiness of the fan rests. Field, game, sweetness. Without one of them, the evening would be incomplete. In 2026, when the world gathers again on the stadiums, don't forget to stop by the ice cream stand. Buy two cones. One - for yourself, another - for your neighbor on the stands. Football unites, and ice cream makes this unity sweeter.
