Авторы сборника опубликовали малоизвестные и вовсе неизвестные архивные материалы, записки очевидцев, публикации прессы, которые по-новому позволяют взглянуть на события англо-бурской войны 1899-1902 годов.

Публикуемые в двух частях (архивные документы и материалы - 226 названий и воспоминания очевидцев - 94 названия) материалы показывают цели и задачи войны, содержат свидетельства ее очевидцев. Это - документы Архива внешней политики Российской Империи (АВПРИ), Российского государственного военно-исторического архива (РГВИА) и другие материалы, в которых сохранен стиль документов и эпистолярных образцов того времени.

Среди документов аналитичностью и информативностью выделяются материалы, авторы которых имели непосредственное касательство к событиям англо-бурской войны: поручика А.Е. Едрихина-Вандама, военного агента в Лондоне А.С. Ермолова, военного агента при английской армии П.А. Стаховича, военного агента при бурских армиях В.И. Ромейко-Гурко, военного инженера капитана М.А. фон Зигерн-Корна, штабс-капитана А.Н. Шульженко. Эти рассказы дополнены богатыми по содержанию интервью и письмами русских офицеров-добровольцев: полковника Е.Я. Максимова, штабс-капитана В.Т. Айпа, поручика А.Н. Ганецкого, подпоручика Л.С. Покровского, подпоручика Е.Ф.Августуса, подпоручика князя М.Н. Енгалычева, а также гражданских добровольцев - В.И. Рубанова, дамы, скрывшейся под псевдонимом Марии 3. (предположительно О.Н. Поповой - с. 513), сестры милосердия С.В. Изъединовой.

В сборнике помещены также документы, касающиеся помощи российского медицинского персонала бурам, письма оказавшихся в английском плену русских офицеров, а также сообщения английских офицеров и корреспондентов.

В заключение авторы дают картину послевоенного положения в Южной Африке. Весьма ценная часть книги - примечания, библиография (на русском и английском языках) и перечень имен, дополняющие сведения об авторах публикуемых документов. Работа Н.Г. Воропаевой, Р.Р. Вяткиной, Г.В. Шубина - ценный вклад в африканистику. В то же время - это и книга о России, о ее достойных предках.

Particular attention is devoted to the contradiction between the official ban on political assassinations and the persistent practice of their application under new legal justifications.
