The Metaphysical Meaning of the Number 4: The Foundation of the Material World and Cosmic Order

Introduction: The Number of Manifested Reality

If the trio (3) symbolizes dynamic creation and spiritual synthesis, then the number four (4) embodies stability, completeness, and material embodiment. This is the number on which the process of emanation "stops," gaining form and structure. The metaphysics of the number four is the metaphysics of the earth, the body, the law, and the stable foundation on which any further construction is possible. It represents the transition from idea to its manifested, tangible embodiment.

1. Geometric and Mathematical Foundation: From Point to Volume

The number four has a powerful geometric expression.

Square/Cube: The simplest flat figure with equal sides and angles is the square (4 sides, 4 angles). Its three-dimensional continuation is the cube (6 faces, but 8 vertices and 12 edges, based on quadrangles). The cube is considered the symbol of perfect form, stability, and the earth. This is the fundamental structure of the crystal lattice, the foundation of matter.

Cross: Another key symbol is the equilateral cross, whose four rays define the basic directions of space (north, south, west, east). This is the number of orientation in the world, the establishment of coordinates.

Tetrahedron (pyramid): The simplest polyhedron consisting of 4 faces (triangles), 4 vertices, and 6 edges. In sacred geometry, the tetrahedron is considered the first manifestation of spirit in matter, the elementary "cell" of space.

From a mathematical point of view, 4 is the first composite number, the result of multiplying 2x2 and adding 3+1. This shows its nature as duality brought to order (2x2) and as a spiritual principle (3) gaining a material foundation (1).

2. Cosmological and Natural Quaternities: The Structure of the Universe

The number four lies at the foundation of many models of the cosmos in different traditions.

Four elements (primeval elements): Earth, Water, Air, Fire — the ancient (mainly Empedoclean and Aristotelian) concept describing the fundamental qualities of the material world. Their combination and struggle give rise to the diversity of things.

Four cardinal directions: Structuring space is one of the first intellectual operations of man. The four directions create a picture of the world inscribed in the sacred cross or mandala.

Four seasons: Spring, summer, autumn, winter — a cyclic model of time reflecting the processes of growth, maturation, decay, and rest.

Four phases of the Moon: New Moon, waxing, full moon, waning — another cyclic pattern linking the number with the rhythms of nature.

Interesting fact: In Indian cosmology, the world rests on four elephants standing on the shell of a giant tortoise. This mythological expression of the idea that the world order needs multiple, stable supports.

3. Theological and Anthropological Aspects: Divine Order and Human Nature

The four evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the Christian tradition are often symbolized by the tetramorph — a creature with four faces (man, lion, bull, eagle), which originates from the vision of Ezekiel. Their texts form the four-part foundation of the New Testament.

Four noble truths in Buddhism: The most fundamental collection of teachings of the Buddha: the truth of suffering, its cause, its cessation, and the path to its cessation. This is a four-part diagnosis and recipe for liberation.

Four castes in ancient India: Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (farmers, traders), Shudras (servants) — a model of an ideal social order.

Four temperaments: Sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic — the ancient and medieval classification of human characters based on the predominance of one of the four "humors" of the body.

Four goals of life in Hinduism (puрушартха): Dharma (duty, law), Artha (profit, wealth), Kama (desire, pleasure), Moksha (liberation). This quaternity describes the full spectrum of human aspirations.

4. Psychological and Cultural Manifestations: The Archetype of Order

In analytical psychology, the number four is the archetype of wholeness, order, and the Self (the central archetype uniting the conscious and the unconscious). The mandala — the sacred circle, often divided into four sectors — is the key symbol of this wholeness and psychic integration.

In culture, the rule of four manifests everywhere:

Four times of the day (morning, day, evening, night).

Four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

Four suits in cards (in the European tradition).

Four dimensions in physics (three spatial and one temporal in the theory of relativity).

Example: In alchemy, the great work (Magnum Opus) over the creation of the Philosopher's Stone went through four main stages corresponding to colors and elements: Nigredo (blackness, earth, decomposition), Albedo (whiteness, water, purification), Citrinitas (yellowness, air, enlivenment), and Rubedo (redness, fire, synthesis and perfection).

5. Astronomical and Numerological Correspondences

In astrology, the number four is associated with the Earth signs of the trigon (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) — practical, stable, material. In numerology, 4 is the number of diligence, discipline, construction, and a solid foundation. Its energy is conservative, reliable, but may become rigid and limiting. It symbolizes the transformation of chaos into cosmos through hard work and systematization.

6. "Quaternity" (quaternarity) as the Principle of Fullness

Young introduced the term "quaternity" to describe fundamental structures striving for the form 4 (3+1). For example, the trio (the Holy Trinity) is unconsciously supplemented with the fourth, "dark" or rejected element (for example, the figure of the Devil or the Virgin Mary in different interpretations). This indicates that the psyche and reality strive for wholeness, which is often expressed in four-part patterns. The number four is the number of a completed system, where there is room for all necessary elements.

Conclusion: The Number of the Cosmos Opposing Chaos

The metaphysical meaning of the number 4 is the meaning of established order, unshakable stability, and material realization. This is the number of the earth beneath our feet, a house with four walls, a table with four legs. It symbolizes the moment when spirit gains form, and idea — concrete embodiment.

If 3 is the creative impulse, then 4 is the law, structure, and fruit of this creation. It reminds us of the need for a foundation, boundaries, work, and patience. Its shadow is rigidity, limitation, and fear of change. However, without this ordering, crystallizing force, nothing in the manifested world could exist. Thus, the number four is the foundation on which only growth, development, and the existence of all other, more complex forms are possible. This number-manifestation, number-foundation, making the world stable, comprehensible, and habitable.
