V. I. POPOV, A. Yu. RUDNITSKY. V. I. Lenin's Foreign-Policy and Diplomatic Activity.

The article is based on documentary materials first published in Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. A Biographical Chronicle. 1870 - 1924, which greatly broaden our knowledge of Lenin as the architect of Soviet foreign policy. The authors concentrate chiefly on Lenin's formulation of the underlying principles of socialism's foreign policy, proletarian internationalism, and peaceful coexistence of states with different social systems, and the ways and means of translating them into reality. The article covers the period from 1917 to 1921 - the period of the emergence and first steps of Soviet diplomacy.

V. Ya. LAVERYCHEV, I. M. PUSHKAREVA. Problems Involved in the Study of Russian Working-Class History in the Imperialist Period.

In examining the main directions of continued research in the problems of the history of the Russian working class of the period of imperialism, the authors stress the need for a comprehensive approach and discuss some concrete methods of solving the more general problems. In this context, they urge further investigation of the hegemony of the proletariat in the bourgeois-democratic revolution, and of some aspects of CPSU history, such as the tactic of Left blocks, the struggle against manifestations of opportunism, and development of the strike movement at different stages. The article also emphasises the need for a more precise definition of the working class and a more accurate estimate of its numerical strength, more effective methods of studying the conditions of proletariat, and more stress on the international significance of the Russian working-class movement.

V. B. VINOGRADOV. The Genesis of Feudalism in the Central Caucasus.

The author discusses the genesis of feudalism among the highlanders of the Karachai- Cherkess, Kabardino-Balkarsk, Ossetian and Checheno-Ingush regions using historical sources, archaeological and architectural, as well as ethnographic, folklore, linguistic and ecological data. He singled out three main periods in the process of feudalisation - up to the mid-13th century, from the mid-13th to the 17th century, from the 18th to the mid-19th century. The article analyses the specifics of this protracted and uneven process, the factors that prevented its completion, and local variants of feudal relations.

A. S. GUSKOV. Democratic Yemen: Progressive Evolution of Revolutionary Democracy.

The article discusses the main stages of the national-democratic development of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, the emergence and evolution of the National Front as the organisation which led the struggle for national liberation and Yemen's socialist orientation, its transformation into the vanguard party of the working people, guided by the principles of scientific socialism. The author analyses the factors that contributed to the republic's socialist orientation and traces the process by which the three contingents of the national-democratic movement united to form a single organisation, the forerunner of the Yemeni Socialist Party.

M. M. PETROVSKAYA. US Public Opinion and US Foreign Policy.

A study of the growing influence of US public opinion on foreign policy, revealed with especial clarity in the past few decades. The article examines new forms of relations between the state apparatus and the public, and cites interesting examples how public opinion found its reflection in US foreign policy in the post-war period. The author emphasises that by manipulating mass consciousness especially in the present complex external and internal situation, the ruling circles can change the tenor of public opinion.

L. V. SKRYPNIKOVA. The Liberation Struggle of the British West Indies in the 19th Century.

The article deals with the liberation struggle waged by the peoples of the Caribbean (Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago) then part of the British West Indies. The author analyses two stages of this struggle: 1) against slavery (up to its abolition in 1833) and 2) against the economic and political domination of the plantator oligarchy in the second half of the 19th century, a struggle that forced Britain to change its colonial policy in the West Indies, in particular, to grant these colonies the status of Crown colonies during the 1870s-1890s.
